Not only Rath, but also the district Unterrath once belonged to the core of the former ‘Honschaft’ (administrative unit of farming communities) of Rath. In 1891, as the settlement of Rath was due to get its own railway station, there was already a station called Rath in what is today Oberrath. To differentiate between them, the new station in what was actually the older district was named Unterrath. So all because of the railway!
But in 1909 everything came together again, as at their own request, Unterrath, Rath and Lichtenbroich became part of Düsseldorf. But even from Unterrath, the airport is not far away. The A52 motorway runs through the eastern part of the district, with the A44 running through the north (although for the greater part in a tunnel).
Yet despite these major transport routes, you can lead a thoroughly sedate life in Unterrath. Housing comprises predominantly mostly older terrace, semi-detached and detached houses. But Unterrath cannot be said to be ‘built up’: the district is broken up by countless small areas of greenery.
Although on the basis of its age profile, Unterrath can hardly be considered one of Düsseldorf’s most youthful districts, its inhabitants seem to be keen on fitness. It is home not only to an indoor swimming pool, but also five sports fields and sports halls.
In 2003, in Unterrath’s north-west, and in contrast to the rest of the district, the Airport City was founded on the former British forces site. This is a prestigious business park in the immediate vicinity of Düsseldorf airport, and which is still evolving today.
