The Altenessener Straße forms the centre of the district, and in the area around the Altenessen local rail station has undergone improvements. The underground rail line has been extended further to the north and on to Gelsenkirchen. The station square has been redesigned and new residential, office and retail buildings have been constructed. The Allee-Center shopping centre by the Altenessen-Mitte underground station offers a wide range of shops and services.
