Witten lies to the south-east of Bochum, not far away from the Bergisches Land and Sauerland. The municipal area comprises both urban and rural areas. The infrastructure is not concentrated within a town centre, but is rather found in the individual districts. The idyllic yet perfectly connected Bommern area of Wittern is only around 2km from the town centre and main rail station. The Ruhr river separates Bommern and nearby area Herbede from the rest of Witten. Three bridges link Brommern to the town centre: one for road traffic, one for rail and the Nachtigallbrücke for pedestrians, Witten is connected to the A43, A44 and A45 motorways. Regular direct buses and trains take you to surrounding cities such as Dortmund and Bochum.
