This southern part of the town lies around five kilometres south-west of Herne’s centre. Amenities and living standards here are traditionally better than those in Wanne’s northern areas. Hauptstraße, which counts as the shopping area, leads to Eickel market and the old town centre. Around a small pedestrian zone are grouped the offices of the company Hülsmann AG, a new development of terrace houses with interesting architecture and a former brewery, as well as some restaurants and pubs. Eickel’s most popular residential area can be found near the Volksgarten park, but the area further to the north, near the sports park, is also a pleasant place to live. Right to the south, a nicely laid out landscape park can be found on the site of the former Zeche Königsgrube colliery.
