The streets in the Friedrichstadt area are arranged like a chessboard. The reason for this is that, in the middle of the 19th century, Düsseldorf was extended to the south. Friedrichstadt was created on the drawing board, so to speak. It was named in honour of Prussian King Friedrich Wilhelm IV. However, locals initially referred to it as Walachei, a derogatory reference to its swampy and perceived impassable ground. The new Friedrichstadt soon developed into a sought-after residential area, with public officials and officers making their home here. At the time, Friedrichstadt was known as the ‘contented south’. Even today, the district is characterised by attractive and sought-after buildings dating from that initial period, with those around Fürstenplatz regarded as especially appealing. The district underwent enormous gentrification, with one of the reasons being development around the Schwanenspiegel and Kaiserteich ponds, according to plans created by Maximilian Weyhe. In 1880, the representatives of the Prussian Rhine Province moved into the imposing Ständehaus. A striking example of the historicism style in Düsseldorf. Until 1988, the Ständehaus served as the parliament building for the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, founded in 1946. The building is now an annexe of the North Rhine-Westphalia art collection. High culture has therefore now reached the district!
