Wallbox funding 2026: how to secure up to 2,000 euros per parking space

The Federal Ministry for Transport (BMV) is now supporting the installation of charging infrastructure in and at multi-occupancy buildings with a new funding programme. The BMV is specifically focusing on the existing building stock to make charging infrastructure more accessible at the approximately nine million off-street parking spaces. Funding is available for purchasing and installing private charging infrastructure, such as wallboxes together with the necessary technical equipment. Grid connections and necessary construction work are also eligible. Applications can be submitted from 15 April 2026.

Funding focuses on multi-occupancy buildings

Federal Transport Minister Patrick Schnieder says: “The switch to an electric car often founders not on willingness, but on the ability to charge at home. A large proportion of Germany’s population lives in multi-occupancy buildings, yet the associated parking spaces still have inadequate charging infrastructure. We are now changing that with 500 million euros in funding. We are making investment in private charging facilities much more attractive and bringing the infrastructure to where it is needed. Electromobility can succeed only if it is practical in everyday life.”

Key funding details at a glance

The programme is divided into three simultaneous calls for applications for different eligible applicants:

  1. condominium owners’ associations (WEGs),
  2. small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and private owners of residential property for letting, and
  3. housing associations and property companies with larger housing portfolios.

Up to 500 million euros in funding is available in total. The charging capacity of each charging point may not exceed 22 kW. Interested parties can submit their funding applications from 15 April 2026.

Applications from the first two recipient groups will be processed in the order in which they are received. If an application is approved, the funding will be awarded as a fixed amount. Applications may be submitted until 10 November 2026.

Funding for companies with large housing portfolios will be awarded through a competitive procedure. Applications in this category may be submitted until 15 October 2026. Approvals will be issued after the competitive procedure has concluded.

Funding conditions at a glance

The new programme focuses on electrifying a larger existing building stock. One condition for receiving funding is that at least 20 per cent of the existing parking spaces at a multi-occupancy building must be pre-wired. At least six parking spaces in or at a multi-occupancy building must always be electrified.

The amount of funding for each parking space to be electrified is:

  • a maximum of 1,300 euros without an installed wallbox,
  • a maximum of 1,500 euros with a wallbox, or
  • a maximum of 2,000 euros with a charging point that supports bidirectional charging.

The National Centre for Charging Infrastructure, which has planned and supported activities to expand charging infrastructure in Germany on behalf of the BMV and under the umbrella of the federally owned NOW GmbH since 2020, is providing technical oversight for the new funding programme.

Dagmar Fehler, CEO and spokesperson of NOW GmbH, explains: “Germany has around 21 million homes in multi-occupancy buildings and almost nine million associated parking spaces, representing enormous potential for expanding private charging infrastructure. As charging at home is particularly popular, the new BMV funding targets precisely this area. The National Centre for Charging Infrastructure is supporting the programme in technical and organisational matters, from development through to practical implementation.”

Aiming to increase willingness to invest

The new funding programme implements Measure 3 (“Charging infrastructure in multi-occupancy buildings”) of the “Charging Infrastructure Masterplan 2030”, adopted by the Federal Cabinet in November 2025. Financial support from the BMV is intended to increase the willingness of owners and owners’ associations to invest and accelerate the installation of charging facilities.

Applications are submitted through the project administrator PricewaterhouseCoopers GmbH Wirtschaftsprüfungsgesellschaft. It provides a digital application portal for the entire process that offers extensive information and assistance in addition to the application itself.

The National Centre for Charging Infrastructure recently published a new guide to implementing charging infrastructure in multi-occupancy buildings. The “WEGweiser” is intended for condominium owners’ associations and gives them targeted support in preparing for the funding programme.
