Location
Anything that has Kaiser (‘emperor’) in its name must be something special. And Kaiserswerth, Düsseldorf’s oldest residential area and most rich in tradition, really does have lots to offer. Its history of fortification can be seen in its layout today. One of the oldest Rhine crossings of the middle ages was here. The mighty ruins of the imperial palace, up to 15 metres high, provide an indication of Kaiserswerth’s rich past. It was established by emperor Friedrich Barbarossa in the 12th century, exercising control of the river and region for hundreds of years. Also worth a visit is the Romanic House, which is unique in the region. Another tourist attraction is the marketplace, which is typical of small towns in the Lower Rhine area. Here you will find numerous historic buildings. The headquarters of the Diakonessen, a Christian social and welfare organisation, serve as a reminder of a great act for the benefit of the public. In 1838, protestant pastor Theodor Fliedner founded the Diakonische Werk, whose most prominent student was Florence Nightingale. The area around the marketplace offers excellent shopping – and dining. From gourmet restaurants to takeaways, everything is here.
