History of the HomeCompany

The idea of ‚flat-sharing’ is not new, but its form has changed and developed over the years.

In the past, the pleasant, single gentleman lived as a sub-tenant in the home of the kind older lady, taking a friendly, furnished room. This was followed by the period of ‚flat-sharing communities’, alternative flat-sharing groups mostly consisting of students looking to escape the bourgeois parents’ home, finding low rent until a new home could be afforded.

In recent years both the clientele and the accommodation available has changed significantly. Whether it’s through professional mobility, a lifestyle change, renovation work in the home or you’re simply returning from a long journey abroad, there are many reasons you might need a temporary place to live. And the current supply of accommodation is in line with what people are looking for – functional apartments, modern flats, exclusive lofts, cosy houses – there is now a broad and varied choice. 1980 - 1985

Foundation of first flat-share offices.

1987

The flat-share agencies in Essen, Hanover and Munich set up a working group for exchange of experience and joint legal consultancy.

1988

29 flat-share agencies found the Verband der Mitwohnzentralen e.V.. Articles of association are confirmed, clear conditions for membership and common standards of procedure are defined.
1989 Cooperation in the association grows, especially in supra-regional mediation. Foreign groups also express interest in joining, Zurich and Vienna become partners.
1990 - 1992 The image of flat-sharing agencies changes. A new logo makes it clear that not only‚ flat-sharing’ is involved. Now, 50 % of accommodation offered is made up of apartments, flats and houses for personal use. Acceptance in society and across companies of all sectors increases.
1993 After the fall of the Berlin Wall, the demand for temporary furnished accommodation increases. Other flat-sharing agencies emerge in the new and old German federal states. The national call number 19445 is set up with a national advertising campaign. The association celebrates 5 years of existence and media interest is immense.
1994  - 1995 In cities, 40 % of customers are now companies, freelancers or travelling business people. In addition to quantity, the quality and variety of accommodation offered also grows. Tenancies with indefinite periods are now also in demand, and are successfully negotiated.
1996 The association introduces the brand ‚HomeCompany‘. The new brand name reflects the increasingly international status of customers and stands for outstanding accommodation quality and first-class customer service. The first agencies initiate their websites.
1997 - 1999 The HomeCompany increases its presence in the market and initial framework agreements are concluded with national and international companies. All 40 agencies are now present online and the services portfolio for customers is expanded.
2000 - 2003 Membership continues to increase and marketing of the brand ‘HomeCompany’ is supported and pushed forward abroad. On account of the customer-oriented development of the websites, search for accommodation can now be organized and commissioned directly and simply, online. Accommodation is illustrated and enables customers to make initial ‘online viewing’.
2004 - 2006 Professional mobility continues to grow and increases demand for temporary furnished accommodation. There are now 50 HomeCompany agencies in Germany and the first branches are opened abroad. Internet marketing becomes more and more important, and the HomeCompany portfolio is now listed in the large property portals.
2007 - 2009 Targeted customer surveys are used as a tool of quality control and the scope of services continuously expanded for both customers and those offering accommodation. Additional features on the internet improve customer convenience and increase the quality of our portfolio.
2010 The HomeCompany currently has 52 agencies in Germany and 6 agencies abroad. International companies and private customers appreciate our top-quality portfolio and the professional and simple way we handle business at the HomeCompany.
2011 Homecompany is launching a new, completely redesigned website. Inspired by our customer’s suggestions and requests, the new design allows you to access the accommodation offers without detours . The relaunch makes our internet easier, better arranged, barrier-free and more sophisticated.
